Good Practice – difficult conversations

Does which set you are placed in impact on your confidence or wellbeing?  Donna, from Oulder Hill, will share her experience of capturing pupil voice around the contentious issue of where to set/group children who are new to English.  This will be followed by a short workshop, led by Lauren, around how to have difficult conversations with colleagues.

Educational Outcomes of Children with English as an Additional Language

The Education Policy Institute, The Bell Foundation and Unbound Philanthropy have published a new report which analyses current policies and funding for EAL learners and provides recommendations on how they can be supported to fulfil their potential. During this session we will explore the headline figures published by the Department for Education, which show that in 2016 EAL pupils performed well,  and consider how the data is distorted.  We will look at what the data does tell us and how we can use that within our own settings.

Scaffolding Definitions

This practical session will explore the difference between content obligatory language and content compatible language and consider why both are necessary in an EAL friendly classroom.  There will be opportunities to scaffold examples of each.  (And you are bound to discover that you’re doing some of this already!)

Applying ‘particular weakness’ to teacher assessment of writing

Emily will demystify the recent introduction of ‘particular weaknesses’ to the KS1 and KS2 teacher assessment of writing.  For Secondary colleagues, this should also be useful as it should help build an understanding of how EAL children may achieve expected standard while still displaying a recognisable weakness in writing.

Emily Humphrey, EMA Teaching & Learning Advisor, Rochdale Borough Council

Emily Humphrey, Teaching and learning Adviser

Prior to becoming a Teaching and Learning Adviser, I was a teacher and senior leader in a Rochdale primary school with responsibility for the English curriculum and supporting children for whom English is an additional language, throughout the school.

On joining the Rochdale School Improvement Team, I was trained to support schools through the National Improving Schools Programme. Since then, I have had the privilege to work with school staff in the main areas of Key Stage One, working with children from ethnic minority groups and those who have English as an additional language. As an accredited Key Stage One moderator, I have supported schools with their statutory assessment duties and led an effective LA moderation team.

I continue to love my role, working with the staff and children of Rochdale schools. I am interested in using my licence as an ELKLAN trainer to support school staff to use effective ways to develop children’s language and communication. It is a privilege to work with Rochdale schools to develop fun and exciting ways to provide children with engaging learning opportunities so that they enjoy school and reach their potential.
