Developing Communication and Language in the EYFS

In this online session Jean will draw out the implications of the new EYFS statutory framework and the non-statutory Development Matters, emphasising the types of everyday classroom practice that best develop children’s communication and language. She will explore ways of building children’s vocabulary, how to provide ‘ a little extra’ for some children, and how to work with parents. There will be activities for participants to do in their own setting, on their own or as a staff group, and opportunities for discussion and questions.

This course is aimed at Head teachers, Reading Leaders and EYFS Teachers.

Jean Gross — CBE

Jean Gross CBE is a best-selling author and popular speaker on children’s issues. She was formerly government Communication Champion for children and young people, responsible for promoting the importance of good language skills. Recently she chaired the ‘Bercow: Ten Years On’ independent review of services for children with speech, language and communication needs. She has frequently acted in an advisory capacity to government , including on the 2021 new EYFS, and currently sits on expert group looking at government plans to improve the communication and language skills of under-fives.
