Encouraging Independent Learning for TAs

  • This course is aimed at TAs who regularly work with groups of pupils independently and also HLTAs who work with pupils without the presence of a teacher

This course is designed to support both TAs who have extensive experience of supporting learning directly in the classroom as a general TA or as one-to-one support for individual pupils with specific difficulties/SEN or for newer less experienced TAs who are just beginning to build up their professional skills and knowledge.

NB: There have also been recommendations in 2015 following research carried out in relation to making best use of support staff. In addition to this, the DfE are expected to report on the review of TA National Occupational Standards in June 2015 which is also expected to have a significant impact on effective deployment of TAs nationally.

The course content includes:

  • Promoting  teachers and TAs working together effectively
  • Investigating how TAs contribute to reducing instances during lessons when pupils are ‘off- task’
  • Exploring strategies to encourage independent working in class
  • Analysing behaviours that signal when pupils are experiencing difficulties and using appropriate interventions

Please note that lunch will not be provided, therefore delegates are advised to bring their own

Jane Walton, External Consultant, The TA Advisor

Jane Walton is known to most Rochdale schools and their staff, having been responsible for developing and managing training and qualifications for RMBC support staff, in both Adult Education and the School Improvement Service from 1998 to 2013.

Jane is now a free-lance trainer, developing and delivering bespoke training to schools around the North-West, West Yorkshire, the Midlands, and occasionally abroad.

A key feature of Jane’s work is in supporting CPD leaders as they find their way through the qualifications frameworks and access training and development that ties in coherently with their school development plan requirements. Her focus is on developing the “professional persona” of all support staff enabling them to view themselves as co-professionals with teachers and to have confidence in their role, context, responsibilities and abilities to enable and empower pupils to enjoy, achieve and succeed.
