Reducing parental conflict is everyone’s business.  Any clinician, practitioner or volunteer working with children, young people and families can have an impact on reducing parental conflict.  The risk of conflict between parents is higher at crucial transition points in family life, such as becoming pregnant, having a baby, an illness, a child starting or changing school, or separation and divorce. However, relationship difficulties are often seen as a private matter, and couples tend to only seek help when they are in crisis. Front-line practitioners in health, early years, social care, and education settings often lack the confidence, tools and knowledge to raise relationship issues with parents and so miss opportunities to identify and support families experiencing parental conflict.

All couples argue and that’s perfectly normal, however - couples who argue frequently and struggle to resolve their arguments in a healthy way are more likely to access a range of other services including the Police, mental health, social care and substance misuse teams.  They are also more likely to suffer a range of poor health outcomes. 

In order to respond to the need for all professionals who come in to contact with couples and families to feel confident in talking about relationship distress and conflict we have commissioned a widely used national programme called How to Argue Better.  This is based on research and evidence and has been designed the national relationship charity OneplusOne who understand relationships and have decades of experience in this field.

Course content:

•              Understanding what makes parents vulnerable to relationship stress and conflict – triggers

•              How to identify what kind of conflict a couple is experiencing

•              Conflict styles and how they contribute to the downward spiral of relationship breakdown

•              Understanding the science of relationship development

•              How to use the How to Argue Better resources to support parents

Healthy Schools T&L Adviser

I joined Rochdale LA School Improvement Team in 2018 as the Healthy Schools Teaching and Learning adviser where I work closely with a range of partners including the Commissioning team, Public Health, School Nursing and the YPMHST.

Prior to joining the council, I was a Teacher and a Senior Leader with over 20 years’ experience in teaching and a senior leader in both Primary and High school so I bring a wealth of experience from both a teaching and leadership background. I also have experience of teaching and leading in a specialist unit for Primary pupils with an Autism and SP&L diagnosis.

I am extremely passionate about ensuring our children and young people have the best possible support for their education, health and wellbeing. I believe pupils should be enabled to have their voice heard and listened to so the Healthy school's programme offers support to schools to set up school councils as well projects to support all aspects of health and wellbeing.

By Road: The Rochdale campus is 2.6 miles from junction 20 off the M62. Follow the signs for Rochdale town centre

By Rail: Rochdale train station is a ten minute walk from the Rochdale Campus through the town centre. It is also a Metrolink station, Manchester’s light railway system, which links Rochdale with Oldham, Bury and Manchester City Centre.

By Bus: The Rochdale bus station is approximately 5 minutes’ walk from the Rochdale campus. There are frequent bus services throughout the borough which terminate in Rochdale.
