This course is an introductory session for those new to the role of Designated Teacher for Looked After Children (Cared for Children).

The course introduces participants to:

  • the roles and responsibilities of the Designated Teacher for Cared for Children
  • the journey children will have taken that leads to them coming into the Care of the Local Authority
  • Personal Education Plans (PEPs) what they, how they fit into Care Planning and what they aim to do
  • some of the educational issues arising from being in Care and how schools can respond to them
  • key support mechanisms and sources of support, including the Pupil Premium Plus

    This course is a must for those new to or unsure of their role as the Designated Teacher for Looked After Children in schools, settings or colleges.

Christopher Tyler

Christopher is Virtual Head Teacher of our Virtual School. The school supports our Cared for Children (Looked After Children), previously Cared for and those with a social worker. He’s worked here since 2015, before which he was VHT for Staffordshire. He has worked for the National Strategies’ ‘Narrowing the Gap’ team and led Manchester’s vulnerable and mobile children team. He is a secondary English teacher by training and has worked extensively with marginalised and vulnerable children, including Gypsy Roma Traveller children and as a teacher for the Roberts’ Bros. Super Circus school.

By Road: The Rochdale campus is 2.6 miles from junction 20 off the M62. Follow the signs for Rochdale town centre

By Rail: Rochdale train station is a ten minute walk from the Rochdale Campus through the town centre. It is also a Metrolink station, Manchester’s light railway system, which links Rochdale with Oldham, Bury and Manchester City Centre.

By Bus: The Rochdale bus station is approximately 5 minutes’ walk from the Rochdale campus. There are frequent bus services throughout the borough which terminate in Rochdale.
