Supervising and Managing Effective Group Work for Teaching Assistant’s

This workshop is aimed at TAs who regularly work with groups of pupils independently
This workshop is designed to support both TAs who have extensive experience of supporting learning directly in the classroom as a general TA or for newer less experienced TAs who are just beginning to build up their professional skills and knowledge. Many TAs work with smaller groups in both formal intervention situations and less formal group activities – often with SEN or lower ability pupils and these pupils can become isolated in their learning apart from the larger class groups. All pupils need to develop good interactive learning skills with one another to improve achievement and social development regardless of ability so this workshop aims to explore some basic aspects of learning “as” a group rather than just “In” a group.
The workshop will support TAs to:

Jane Walton, External Consultant, The TA Advisor
Jane Walton is known to most Rochdale schools and their staff, having been responsible for developing and managing training and qualifications for RMBC support staff, in both Adult Education and the School Improvement Service from 1998 to 2013.
Jane is now a free-lance trainer, developing and delivering bespoke training to schools around the North-West, West Yorkshire, the Midlands, and occasionally abroad.
A key feature of Jane’s work is in supporting CPD leaders as they find their way through the qualifications frameworks and access training and development that ties in coherently with their school development plan requirements. Her focus is on developing the “professional persona” of all support staff enabling them to view themselves as co-professionals with teachers and to have confidence in their role, context, responsibilities and abilities to enable and empower pupils to enjoy, achieve and succeed.

By Rail: Rochdale train station is a ten minute walk from the Rochdale Campus through the town centre. It is also a Metrolink station, Manchester’s light railway system, which links Rochdale with Oldham, Bury and Manchester City Centre.
By Bus: The Rochdale bus station is approximately 5 minutes’ walk from the Rochdale campus. There are frequent bus services throughout the borough which terminate in Rochdale.
