Handwriting for Year 6: Securing Fluency for Extended Writing and SATs

  • This practical face-to-face course is designed for Year 5 and Year 6 teachers and teaching assistants who want to strengthen pupils’ handwriting fluency, stamina and presentation in preparation for the demands of upper Key Stage 2 and beyond.
  • Participants will explore effective strategies to support pupils in developing a consistently joined, legible and efficient handwriting style that enables them to focus on composition rather than transcription.
  • The session will examine common barriers to handwriting fluency, approaches for targeted intervention, and opportunities to embed handwriting practice meaningfully across the curriculum.
  • With a focus on extended writing and readiness for Year 6 assessments, attendees will leave with practical classroom activities, intervention ideas and assessment guidance to help pupils write with greater confidence, speed and accuracy.

Outcomes:

  • Understand the characteristics of fluent and effective handwriting in upper KS2.
  • Identify and address common handwriting difficulties.
  • Develop strategies to improve writing stamina and presentation.
  • Embed handwriting practice within the wider writing curriculum.
  • Support pupils to approach extended writing and SATs with confidence.

I qualified in 1999 and have been a class teacher, Head of Faculty and Head of Sixth Form.  I have had the pleasure of being a subject mentor for a secondary SCITT scheme as well as working for London Challenge to support failing schools.  I joined Rochdale School Improvement Team in 2009, where my initial role was to work with schools in meeting the needs of their ethnic minority and English as Additional Language children and young people.   In this role I have delivered at regional and national conferences and had the opportunity to showcase the excellent practice found in Rochdale.

As a local authority moderator at KS2, and previously at KS1, I’ve worked with some inspiring class teachers.  I am also privileged to run the Rochdale Schools Linking programme, which aims to break down barriers and to enable students to build empathy, respect and confidence in contact.  This  programme has given me the opportunity to work with amazing staff, students and partner             organisations within the LA and across England.

I am passionate about speech, language and communication and am a Specialist Advisory Teacher.  As an accredited ELKLAN tutor, I am qualified to deliver and assess practitioner courses for staff in Early Years, Primary, Secondary and PRUs, in addition to SLCN support linked to social, emotional and mental health. 

I consider myself to be professionally curious. I love to learn and I believe that love of learning can be fostered in all our children and young people.
