WellComm Primary

  • This is a Virtual ZOOM Session
  • WellComm Primary enables you to identify children needing speech and language support, which can make a crucial difference to their confidence and attainment
  • The session will provide training on how to use the Wellcomm Primary which is now in all Rochdale Primary schools.

WellComm Primary enables you to identify children needing speech and language support, which can make a crucial difference to their confidence and attainment:

• It is quick and simple to use by teachers and teaching assistants as well as SENCOs, with traffic light reports. It’s easy to repeat to track progress too.

• The Big Book of Ideas provides instant activities so you can take action while waiting for referral to a Speech and Language Therapist (SLT).

• The WellComm Report Wizard enables you to compare results across a class or the whole school.

A child screened at their chronological age and the practitioner works backwards until they find the child’s language ability age. If the child shows a delay in a certain section, there is corresponding intervention work in the resources “big book of ideas”.

Wellcomm allows the school to target groups of children from Year 1 upwards who would benefit from a ‘screen and intervene’ package of care. It also allows the school the opportunity to gather reportable data on the speech and language skills of primary aged children, which can then be reviewed following intervention.

Due to the pandemic, many KS1 pupils have missed out on the EYFS curriculum and any speech, language and communication intervention which they may have received during this period of disruption. Many schools are reporting a rise in children presenting with speech, language and communication difficulties in KS1 and KS2.

Wellcomm Primary provides schools with data to reflect any concerns regarding speech, language and communication difficulties in KS1 and KS2 and also progress data following the recommended interventions.

Emily Humphrey, EMA Teaching & Learning Advisor, Rochdale Borough Council

Emily Humphrey, Teaching and learning Adviser

Prior to becoming a Teaching and Learning Adviser, I was a teacher and senior leader in a Rochdale primary school with responsibility for the English curriculum and supporting children for whom English is an additional language, throughout the school.

On joining the Rochdale School Improvement Team, I was trained to support schools through the National Improving Schools Programme. Since then, I have had the privilege to work with school staff in the main areas of Key Stage One, working with children from ethnic minority groups and those who have English as an additional language. As an accredited Key Stage One moderator, I have supported schools with their statutory assessment duties and led an effective LA moderation team.

I continue to love my role, working with the staff and children of Rochdale schools. I am interested in using my licence as an ELKLAN trainer to support school staff to use effective ways to develop children’s language and communication. It is a privilege to work with Rochdale schools to develop fun and exciting ways to provide children with engaging learning opportunities so that they enjoy school and reach their potential.
