Mastering the Bar Model and the CPA Approach in Key Stage 1 Mathematics

  • This course will explore how the Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract approach can powerfully benefit all children in KS1
  • Also provide a comprehensive introduction to Bar Model, pioneered in Singapore
  • It will also explore how reasoning skills can be developed in KS1 using powerful Concrete materials and Pictorial representations; Base 10, Place Value Counters, 10s Frames, Fraction Circles, Number Rods and Cubes.

The Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract approach, now closely associated with Teaching for Mastery, is the recognition that children develop deep understanding of mathematical concepts when exposed to concrete materials and pictorial representations.

This course will explore how the CPA approach can powerfully benefit all children in KS1.  Models and Images have traditionally been used in KS1 to support calculations. The CPA approach can, however, help children across KS1 gain deeper understanding of inverses, word problems, and abstract concepts as well as enabling them to reason, develop and explain their thinking. This course will provide a comprehensive introduction to Bar Model, pioneered in Singapore. It will also explore how reasoning skills can be developed in KS1 using powerful Concrete materials and Pictorial representations; Base 10, Place Value Counters, 10s Frames, Fraction Circles, Number Rods and Cubes.

We will focus specifically on their use in the teaching of Number, Calculation, Fractions and Algebraic thinking and on embedding newer pictorial representations into the daily maths lesson.  Delegates will leave equipped with both a deeper understanding of the power of Models and Images, as well as a host of activities they can use to enhance the mathematical learning of children across KS1.
