Revitalising Mathematics Lessons in Year 1 and 2 – New ideas and new developments for immediate use in the classroom

  • The ‘Revitalising Mathematics’ course will set out a wide range of imaginative and highly interactive ways to help develop recall, reasoning, number sense and consolidation of calculation strategies.
  • These will be modelled and demonstrated through high quality activities, practical resources, discussion activities, dice games, reasoning games, and many more great ideas for making your maths exciting

Objectives

  • To raise standards in mathematics by revitalising the teaching of mental calculation and number sense
  • To develop a variety of ways of making mathematics fun, pacy and interactive
  • To demonstrate a range of games, visual resources, practical models and ICT-based images that can be used to enhance the teaching of the daily maths lesson

In order for children to become proficient in mathematics, especially when calculating, there is clearly a great need for both a ‘sense of number’ and the ability to calculate quickly and efficiently.

This involves learning facts, but equally as important is to equip children with a repertoire of mental calculation strategies so that they can ‘calculate with confidence’.

Use of ICT is valuable, but shouldn’t take over a maths lesson – many of the best activities need to be demonstrated and practised with oral, visual and practical resources!

Giving children ‘hands-on’ experience and whole class interaction ensures that the maths becomes stimulating, challenging and most of all fun! Teachers , therefore, need to find many effective ways:

  • To ensure that children can use the facts they’ve learned to develop and embed a clear set of mental calculation strategies
  • To keep up with the levels of expectation required for each year group
  • To put the fun, pace and enjoyment back into their maths teaching and the children’s learning

The ‘Revitalising Mathematics’ course will set out a wide range of imaginative and highly interactive ways to help develop recall, reasoning, number sense and consolidation of calculation strategies.  These will be modelled and demonstrated through high quality activities, practical resources, discussion activities, dice games, reasoning games, and many more great ideas for making your maths exciting, relevant and challenging!   Age-related expectations will also be discussed so that all participants know exactly what is expected of them in their particular year groups, and the most effective ways of achieving this.
