Understanding anxiety in children

  • What is anxiety?
  • When should we be concerned about it?
  • How can we increase children’s resilience to reduce the possibility of them becoming anxious?
  • How can we best support children with anxiety?

Anxiety is the most prevalent mental health condition affecting primary aged children and has significantly increased in recent years (NHS Digital, 2017). Whilst the anxiety of many children will be recognised and understood by teachers, there will be many more whose anxiety goes unnoticed or unrecognised for what it is. Sometimes, this is because the behaviours of children with anxiety may be different to the behaviours of adults with the same condition. The world continues to present more and more reasons for children to feel anxious. This course looks at the support we can offer children in a school environment.
