Bereavement (Including CIRT)

  • To gain a deeper understanding of bereavement, loss and grief
  • To recognise the impact on development across all ages
  • To look at the evidence base and useful resources
  • To recognise the importance of looking after ourselves and our own wellbeing and to identify ways of supporting ourselves.

This course will aim to develop an understanding of the impact on cyp of experiencing bereavement, grief and loss.  The training will introduce some strategies, approaches and resources to help equip staff to support cyp in school.  Experiencing the stress, anxiety and pain of loss of a parent or other close family member, can impact a child or young person in many different ways. Some of the impact will be highly visible but some will not be as easy to recognise and understand.  Unfortunately more children and young people in today’s society are becoming exposed to loss from suicide.  There will be some discussion of bereavement through suicide which often results in complicated grief responses.  A section of this course will be dedicated to considering Critical Incident responses in schools and the role of support within the local authority.
