Harriet Gilson & Emma Brougham (PENNINE CARE NHS FOUNDATION TRUST)

Harriet Gilson, Educational Mental Health Practitioner (EMHP), Young Person’s Mental Health Support Team (Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale).

I qualified as a Primary School teacher in 2012 and worked for 7 years, in Lancashire, in this role. My favourite part of this role was speaking with the children about their troubles, for example with their friends, the big emotions they were having and helping them navigate these. After a career change, I qualified as an EMHP in 2020. Now I enjoy working with Children, Parents and Schools in HMR to support the Children’s Mental Health and Wellbeing. In the last couple of years, I have taken on a supervisory role, and I am currently working on a further qualification to become a Senior Educational Mental Health Practitioner. This qualification is broadening my clinical knowledge and enabling me to provide better support to my team, in their roles as practitioners.

Emma Brougham, Educational Mental Health Practitioner (EMHP), Young Person’s Mental Health Support Team (Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale).

My background began working in nurseries starting in 2013 for 3 years after completing my early years BTEC. I decided on a career change, and I went to University in Huddersfield and was awarded a first class honours degree in Youth and Community Work. I used my skills learnt there to get involved with mediation within the community helping people to resolve their difficulties using restorative justice alongside supporting Youth Groups within my hometown of Huddersfield. I then moved into the Social Care Sector and during this time, I facilitated supervised contact to promote positive relationships between children and their families. After finding a passion in helping those struggling with mental health difficulties, whilst also enjoying working with children and young people, I applied for the Education Mental Health Practitioners role. I have now been working within this role for 3 and a half years and this has only increased my passion for working with the mental health sector.
