EAL Hub Meeting

Agenda for July 2017:

Behaviour, child neglect and the power of cognates

Behaviour

‘Every challenging behaviour can be thought of as a child’s solution to a problem and a form of communication.’ (Durand 1990)  Where English is not as readily available to a child then, perhaps, behaviour is their first form of communication with school.

This session will consider the potential causes of unwanted behaviours and consider a  relationship based approach to supporting children’s and young people’s behaviour choices.

Child Neglect

Neglect is the most common form of child abuse in the UK.

This session will look at factors that indicate a child is more at risk of neglect, consider the long term impact and offer an opportunity to look at the graded care profile.

Cognates for vocabulary development

Cognates are words in two languages that share a similar meaning, spelling and pronunciation.

This session will look at which languages share cognates with English, consider how to use the power of cognates in class and explore how to manage the risks of false cognates.

In addition, Will McKinley will share good practice Working with traveller families to manage school attendance.

At the sea side - This resource is based around the experiences learners would have at the seaside. What will they see? What will they eat? What will they play with? Through the use of games, a writing frame and a substitution table, new to English learners will be able to both speak and write about imagined experiences at the seaside.

Rivers - This is a pack to help beginner EAL learners with understanding some of the key geographical terms associated with rivers. It can be used as part of a whole class activity or as differentiation within class. It is suitable for 8- to 11-year-olds or 12- to 14-year-olds.

Emily Humphrey, EMA Teaching & Learning Advisor, Rochdale Borough Council

Emily Humphrey, Teaching and learning Adviser

Prior to becoming a Teaching and Learning Adviser, I was a teacher and senior leader in a Rochdale primary school with responsibility for the English curriculum and supporting children for whom English is an additional language, throughout the school.

On joining the Rochdale School Improvement Team, I was trained to support schools through the National Improving Schools Programme. Since then, I have had the privilege to work with school staff in the main areas of Key Stage One, working with children from ethnic minority groups and those who have English as an additional language. As an accredited Key Stage One moderator, I have supported schools with their statutory assessment duties and led an effective LA moderation team.

I continue to love my role, working with the staff and children of Rochdale schools. I am interested in using my licence as an ELKLAN trainer to support school staff to use effective ways to develop children’s language and communication. It is a privilege to work with Rochdale schools to develop fun and exciting ways to provide children with engaging learning opportunities so that they enjoy school and reach their potential.
