EAL Hub Meeting

  • EAL assessment frameworks, models and useful documents for classroom teachers

Agenda for December 2017:

EAL assessment frameworks, models and useful documents for classroom teachers

According to NALDIC, ‘Currently teachers are required to use the DfE’s 5 stages of proficiency in English when monitoring the EAL development of bilingual pupils. However most teachers find that this is not enough.  Screening and identification of proficiency level, whilst necessary for data gathering to establish a school’s EAL profile, is not  a sufficient basis for curriculum based EAL assessment or the planning of EAL provision. An understanding of pupils’ backgrounds and developmental pathways are also needed.’

The first part of the hub will draw on current practice and systems, including the NASSEA framework, the new Bell Foundation tool and the latest addition from Solihull for EYFS EAL assessment.  We will consider each of these in light of the DfE EAL Stages of Proficiency and offer the opportunity to discuss their implications.

Implications of changes to benefits

Hammond announced the scrapping of an initial seven day waiting period, meaning that the wait for Universal Credit should be reduced to five weeks from February 2018.  We will take a quick look at the implications of the changes to benefits for families entitled to claim.

SERCO update

Serco provides vital community accommodation and support services for people while their asylum claim is being processed. They manage an extensive property portfolio with the aim of providing the best possible care.  We are pleased to have a lead member of the regional team coming to update us with any changes to provision in Rochdale.

Parental engagement audit

Schools work hard to forge effective partnerships with parents as research consistently shows that parental involvement in children’s education has significant and lasting benefits.  We will explore the EAL Nexus parental engagement audit tool as one method of evaluating home/school linking.

For further ideas about engaging parents of EAL learners, see the research carried out for EAL Nexus by Dr Patricia Walker

Finally, we would like to draw on the expertise of everyone to help design an effective analysis tool to explore perceptions of new arrivals.

And there will be mince pies!

Emily Humphrey, EMA Teaching & Learning Advisor, Rochdale Borough Council

Emily Humphrey, Teaching and learning Adviser

Prior to becoming a Teaching and Learning Adviser, I was a teacher and senior leader in a Rochdale primary school with responsibility for the English curriculum and supporting children for whom English is an additional language, throughout the school.

On joining the Rochdale School Improvement Team, I was trained to support schools through the National Improving Schools Programme. Since then, I have had the privilege to work with school staff in the main areas of Key Stage One, working with children from ethnic minority groups and those who have English as an additional language. As an accredited Key Stage One moderator, I have supported schools with their statutory assessment duties and led an effective LA moderation team.

I continue to love my role, working with the staff and children of Rochdale schools. I am interested in using my licence as an ELKLAN trainer to support school staff to use effective ways to develop children’s language and communication. It is a privilege to work with Rochdale schools to develop fun and exciting ways to provide children with engaging learning opportunities so that they enjoy school and reach their potential.
