Governor Training - Developing your role: Introductory/ Refresher course for new governors
- Increase governors’ knowledge and understanding of the changing context within which schools/ governing boards operate
- Explore the core strategic functions of the governing board and associated activities
- Identify how governors/ governing boards can improve their effectiveness and impact
So, you’re new to the role… or maybe you’ve been in post for 6 months or so, attended a few governing board meetings, understand some of the issues and jargon, and feel confident to ask questions/ take part in discussions. Or perhaps not! Whatever your stage of development this refresher course will be of value. The roles and responsibilities of governing boards, and the expectations placed on them, are constantly changing, so it’s essential to keep up-to-date with current developments in the world of governance, understand new educational initiatives and legislation, and be aware of good practice. This session will provide an overview of recent changes and their implications for governing boards, how you can become a more effective governor/ team member, and how you and the board can hold the school to account and improve outcomes for children. It will also provide an opportunity for “newish” governors to share their stories/ experiences, to network and collaborate, and plan their next steps.

- Over 30 years of experience working in further /community education and project management.
- Service as a school governor for over 20 years, 15 years as a chair.
- An active member and vice chair of the North West Co-ordinators of Governors Services network and individual member of the National Governors’ Association.
- Membership/ experience of two Interim Executive Boards (IEBs).
- An accredited assessor for Governor Mark award (re-validated in January 2013).
- Accredited by the Safer Recruitment Consortium as a safer recruitment trainer
