Raising Early Achievement in Literacy (REAL)

  • The ‘Making it REAL’ training and projects are designed to enable practitioners to use the ‘REAL’ approach to reach out to parents and families.

REAL is a half-day training course for practitioners, F.S leaders and teachers in early years who would like to apply the 'Making it REAL' approach to early literacy.  The ‘Making it REAL’ training and projects are designed to enable practitioners to use the ‘REAL’ approach to reach out to parents and families. ‘REAL’ uses an evidence-based approach to build parents’ confidence and knowledge to support the early home learning environment. This approach has been shown to have a powerful impact on children's outcomes and on family literacy practices. This project focuses on using the ORIM framework (the 4 main ways families can participate in helping their child to learn and develop). All parents can provide Opportunities for play and learning, Recognise those skills their children are displaying, Interact and Model skills to their child.

Participants are expected to deliver 3 Literacy events for all parents and identify 3-5 families who you think will benefit from this project. These 3 - 5 families must have a total of 2 literacy home visits (per family) before May 2018.

There will be a follow up 2 hour network in the Spring term (Thursday 22nd March 1:15 – 3:15 at Basement Training Suite, Hopwood Hall College, Rochdale Campus ). Additional funding is available (approx. £100 per school). This funding will go directly to the school in order to support this project. Schools will decide how to spend their budget on this project.

2 places are available per school.
