Counselling Skills for Working with Young People

This six hour interactive workshop is designed for those working with young people who have no or little training in counselling skills.

This workshop will not qualify participants as counsellors but is designed to develop the core basic counselling skills necessary to have helpful and supportive conversations with young people. 

The session will be run by a Relate trainer and experienced counsellor and will be a mix of theoretical input and skills practise using realistic and relevant scenarios. 

Course content includes:

  • An understanding of the Counselling Process including Egan’s 3 stage model of counselling.
  • The key skills involved, including active listening, reflecting, summarising and immediacy.
  • Carl Rogers – Core Conditions.
  • Self-awareness and self-disclosure.
  • Use of Socratic Questioning and circular Styles.
  • Transactional Analysis and the P.A.C Model
  • Appropriate and inappropriate empathic responding.
  • The differences in working with adults and young people in a helping role.
  • Boundaries, including confidentiality, contracting, safety, working within competence and knowing when to refer on.
  • Skills practise.
