Earliest Civilisations - Ancient Egypt: Daily Life Along the River Nile

  • Discover the role the River Nile had in allowing the ancient Egyptian civilisation to flourish and examine daily life, comparing it to our own.
  • This fun and interactive CPD has been inspired by the ancient Egyptian objects on display in the Ancient Egypt: Life Along the River Nile exhibition at Touchstones Rochdale.

This session would take the following format:

  • 3:45pm - 4:00pm: (Education Studio) Upon arrival teachers will take a moment to get into the theme with ancient Egyptian inspired refreshments and the chance to network with teachers from other schools.
  • 4:00pm - 4:15pm: (Heritage Gallery) Next, Sarah Hodgkinson from the Museum curatorial team will provide an introduction to the ancient Egyptian focused exhibition Ancient Egypt: Life along the River Nile (on display from 27 May 2017 – 21 April 2018).
  • 4:15pm - 4:20pm: (Heritage Gallery) You will then be joined by freelance artist Alison Cooper who will give you a quick overview highlighting links to the National Curriculum which could be explored in a free self-guided visit with your class.
  • 4:20pm - 4:30pm: (Heritage Gallery) Meet Egyptologist Dr. Victoria Entwistle who will give a lively talk exploring themes from the exhibition.
  • 4:30pm - 5:30pm: Finally, we “Walk like an Egyptian” into the Education Studio with freelancer Alison Cooper where you will try some ancient Egyptian inspired cross-curricular craft activities to take back to the classroom.

There will also be the opportunity to book a related school workshop/loan box with a member of the Education Team.

Sarah Hodgkinson (Link4Life) /Dr Victoria Entwistle (Egyptologist) /Alison Cooper (Freelance Artist)

Sarah Hodgkinson is Museum Curator and Collections Manager for the Arts and Heritage Service. With a specialist interest  in textiles, Sarah has over 15 years’ experience within the heritage sector, working in various venues including Manchester Museum, Manchester Art Gallery and the Gallery of Costume. The Museum has a large and varied collection and includes archaeology, natural sciences, decorative arts, social history and dress.

Dr Vicky Entwistle carried out her doctoral research at the University of Manchester, looking at burial practices in the Predynastic and Old Kingdom periods of Egyptian history. She has carried out research into the more 'unusual' burial practices seen at Egyptian sites, including dismemberment and ritual sacrifice, as well as extensively researching the history of mummification. 

Alison Cooper graduated from De Montfort University, Leicester with a degree in Arts Management and has since worked as a freelance community artist for a number of galleries, museums and community organisations. A keen interest in textiles, craft, heritage, animation and music means she is able to deliver a wide range of mixed and multimedia workshops. Alison works part time for the borough’s Arts & Heritage Service and shares her expert knowledge about the collections through her workshops. As a talented musician, she writes, records and performs her own music as well as through collaborative projects with other musicians. Alison also works directly with schools as a freelancer to deliver bespoke workshops to fit curriculum needs: alison.arts@yahoo.co.uk
