Abby Oakes, STEM Learning PDL
I have always had a passion for understanding the development of children and their education. When I left school I undertook a Diploma in Childcare and Education and from there decided to study teaching. I completed a 4 year degree in Teaching with a specialism of Special Educational Needs. When I finished studying at University I went to teach in the UAE at a private school. During my time there I taught and led a team of 10 reception classes and also had a pastoral role as Head of House. Since returning to the UK I have taught in a one and a half form entry school. I taught a mixed class of Reception/Year 1 for 4 years and have been teaching Year 1 for 2 years. Throughout my time within this role I have been the Science Lead at the school, built strong relationships with other science leads within the area and attended many training courses at York University. I am currently Curriculum Lead for the whole school and work with subject leaders to help them develop and enhance their subject area. For a time I was also Acting Headteacher alongside this role and continued to support the team both academically and pastorally.
