WellComm Secondary - Part One (ZOOM)

  • This virtual session is for the relevant member of SLT and the SENCO
  • PART TWO 10:00 – 12:00 Tuesday 28th June at the REAL Trust - for the members of staff who will use the intervention resources on a regular basis with the children who have a SLCN age below their chronological age

The Local Authority has secured funding for WellComm, a tool which helps to identify children and young people needing speech and language support.  This programme will provide secondary schools with essential information about the SLCN of children joining you this September.   The LA is providing training for secondary colleagues so that you can use this data to meet the needs of your upcoming year 7s.

Who should attend?

The training is split into two parts.

PART ONE 9:00 – 10:00  Tuesday 28th June via Zoom

This is for the relevant member of SLT and the SENCO.  This session, via Zoom, will provided strategic overview of  how WellComm can be used to meet the SLCN in year 7, exploring planning, staff training and progress.  This is about the big picture and is not aimed at staff who will be conducting the interventions.  This session will be delivered by Alison Mitchell, Commissioned Service Lead - Speech and Language Therapy, and David Barter, Senior Performance & Achievement Officer.

PART TWO 10:00 – 12:00 Tuesday 28th June at the REAL Trust

This is for the members of staff who will use the intervention resources on a regular basis with the children who have a SLCN age below their chronological age. During this training, school will be provided with the resources required to utilise the data, monitor progress and provide the relevant intervention. This session will be delivered by Alison Mitchell, Commissioned Service Lead - Speech and Language Therapy.

How does WellComm work?

A child is screened at their chronological age and the practitioner works backwards until they find the child’s language ability age. If the child shows a delay in a certain section, there is corresponding intervention work in the resources “big book of ideas”. The Big Book of Ideas provides instant activities so you can take action while waiting for referral to a Speech and Language Therapist (SLT).

Every primary school has been provided with a WellComm toolkit.  This allows them to screen year six pupils who are working below age expectation and share the WellComm SLCN age with the secondary school the child will join in September.

We believe that providing schools with the WellComm age, and the tools to support a young person improve their speech language and communication age, can make a crucial difference to their confidence and attainment.  This should be a significant contribution to improving outcomes and Raising Rochdale.
